OFF THE GRID San Francisco – Fun, Family, Friends and A Whole Lot of Street Food
Mar 27th, 2011 | By Cloutwomen | Category: Food & Wine, Food / Wine / Restaurant ReviewsA couple of days ago, Kaye, Carol and I had an almost whole day video shoot in Hayward which ended sometime mid afternoon. After that, Kaye and I had another event in San Francisco that turned into a little bit of a ‘temporary’ letdown that lasted all of five minutes. It was about 6pm in San Francisco and for a change, it wasn’t raining. That in itself was a pleasant treat. We’d been holed up under our raincoats and umbrellas for days. SAD was lurking in the shadows.
We were on Chestnut Street at the Marina in San Francisco on a relaxed Friday night and we were with friends. We went to an impromptu party at a cute bath and body store of products made in Israel with scents sourced in Provence. They’re featured here. After spending an unexpected hour there, we headed for Off the Grid at Fort Mason. Kaye and I were craving cupcakes from CupKates and we wanted our friends to try it.
And holy cow, the place was packed! It was a Street Food Street Fair in a parking lot! There WAS Cupkates – and a whole lot more!
Street food in San Francisco has a cult following. These mobile diners with a fan base make use of social media Twitter and Facebook to let their fans know where they will be. And the ever growing crowd goes wild! I don’t know exactly how many vendors where there ~ but the place was full of all kinds of happy, shiny and fun people on their lawn chairs just enjoying a clear (and cold) evening; eating, munching and just plain old having a great time. We went around after securing our cupcakes. We would’ve had dinner here if we knew what it was all about. We WILL be back ~ especially when the weather warms up a little bit. We made a bee line for CupKates. Casey and a friend was working the shift and we said hello. It looked like they were selling well (as expected!). If you haven’t tasted these yet, you’re really missing a good thing! No, really. It’s THAT good!
Here are the other food trucks / street food at Fort Mason that evening.
I love the city; I don’t go there very often but on this fun Friday evening with friends, it sure was fun to discover new things! On the way back we even went down Lombard Street ~ and AGAIN wondered who would like to live in the crookedest street in the world. Except when we were at the top of the hill, I jumped out of the car for a second to take a shot of Coit Tower.
~ and then you get it. So pretty dressed in lights at night. See what a cupcake craving can do?
